Hello there!

My photo
My name is Susan, and Designs by Prater is what you could call my creative outlet that pulls together my photography, art and graphic design endeavors! The most important thing you should know about me is that my life revolves around my God and my Savior Jesus Christ, my family (especially my husband Todd, son JD, and puppy Lexie), family and friends. Other than that, I am pretty much obsessed with photography, Coca-Cola, and the color green (and all shades of green for that matter, especially teal). I love sports but cannot play them worth a lick. I would not trade my time as a college student at Mississippi State for anything in the world. The friendships and memories made there will stick with me forever...Hail State and Go Dogs! And I am very picky about my chocolate chip cookies, grilled cheeses, and shaved ice (gotta be SnoBiz watermelon flavor).

Haha! Apparently I misread the special that my color lab had going on. But don't worry...it's in your favor! Not only will someone get a chance to purchase a canvas gallery wrap for 50% off, but anyone will be able to as long as all wraps are submitted in the same order.

SO...I am extending the deadline until Sunday night! If you want to order a canvas gallery wrap of any image from your session, contact me with the file number and size you wish to purchase. I will still send you an invoice via Paypal and will place the entire order on Memorial Day. To see the images from your session, click your event below! Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.

More info on canvas gallery wraps: Each Canvas is hand wrapped around a 1.5" frame and properly finished with a wire hanger and bumpers. You can choose to leave the back open or cover it with backing. In addition, your canvas will be coated with protective spray which protects your work from harmful UV rays and other atmospheric contaminants.

Atlanta or BUST : Love Affair Workshop Hopeful!

I love photography and hope to always learn something new about the art and profession of photography each day of my life. Which is why I would LOVE to win the scholarship to attend this uber cool photography workshop in Downtown Atlanta later this summer with the lovely ladies of Love Affair.

What a great opportunity it would be to sit down with the wonderful minds of Millie, Davina, Kelly, and Lauren.

To be able to pick their brains about how they set up that perfect shot, catch the gorgeous light, post-process all their images, design their albums, keep in contact with their clients. What a giant learning curve that could be for me!

Not to mention all the other wonderful aspiring and already professional photographers that I would be joining in the workshop. One of those even being an old friend from college, Beth!

So here's to hoping all my scholarship entries prove successful...wish me luck!! Atlanta, here I (hopefully) come :)

mini : lyndie & connor

I hope the sneak peek at Lyndie and Connor's storyboard held you over until now...but the wait is officially over! Here are some of my most favorite images from their shoot not too long ago. P.S. These images make a good point that you should never let a little rain scare you into thinking we can't still get some cute pictures. I loved her colorful umbrella and the way the slight rain brought out all the colors of their hair, shirts, and sides of buildings. :) To see the rest of the images from their shoot, click HERE! Otherwise, enjoy...

sneak peek : connor

I decided I would try to make the most of my sick day at home by finishing my edits of a recent photo shoot with friend and co-worker Lyndie and her precious son, Connor. There was a series of photos in which he was giving me all sorts of goofy faces, so I thought they would make for a very fun storyboard! It also serves as a great sneak peek of how the photos are coming along, too :) Hope you love it girl!

Introducing All-New POWER Sessions!

Designs by Prater will be introducing something new later this week called a POWER session!

What is a POWER session?

Basically, it's a 30-minute portrait session for $30...but here's the deal. They have to be booked and completed on the SAME day. All you have to do is follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook , and watch for us to post a message that it is POWER session time. Then the first person to contact us via the method the sale was posted will get the POWER session for that afternoon.

Why are we doing this?

Well, there are those days where I have been cooped up in an office ALL day long seeing how beautiful it is outside and wishing I was out shooting pictures. So, it's those days when I will post a message sometime from 2-4 p.m. that a POWER session is up for grabs later that night from 6-8 p.m. If we post it on Twitter, be the first to reply to @designsbyprater that you want to book the day's session. If we post it on Facebook, be the first one to comment on the post on Design by Prater's fan page, and you get the day's session. It's pretty easy!

The session can take place anywhere within 30 miles of Collierville, TN, and can include up to 6 people. All pictures will be posted on our DBP Proofing Site within 1-2 weeks for secure online proofing and ordering.

Stay tuned to DBP as we'll be posting the first POWER session later this week should the rain decide to hold out a bit. P.S. rainy afternoon sessions can turn out super cute with colorful umbrellas and rain boots...just saying! :)

In the meantime, check out our online proofing and ordering site HERE. Many galleries are still live and on sale, including pics from Easter at The Church at Schilling Farms!

storyboards : Jace's mini shoot

"What is a storyboard?" I get this question a lot! And truthfully, I wasn't even sure what they were several years ago! But I am going to try my best to explain it here for you today...at least explain what they are and how they are used here at DBP! We'll also continually post examples of some of our favorites from all our shoots periodically up on the blog so you can get a better idea of whether or not it's something you might want to invest in as well.

A storyboard is really just a fancy word that describes how to order a print that includes more than one photo, sort of like a collage. The size is up to you and can be a square print or a vertical or horizontal print. Large like 30"x30" or small like 5"x10". All black and white images, all color images, or mix & match. Totally up to you! We can create one with a simple white background, black background, or very colorful or patterned background. It can have no text on it, or lots of text on it...perhaps a favorite quote or Bible verse or just the name of whoever is in it. We can create one from a blank slate, or you can choose the same template of another one that we have already done for a previous shoot.

Below are some examples that were just created for Jace's mini shoot; hope you like them! If you are interested in having some created from your shoot, or in booking a shoot so we can create one later, contact me via email or facebook! Enjoy :)
